Economic culture based on excess

On the 6 November 2011 edition of the Andrew Marr Show, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, said this:

"It is very important that... we do get away from an economic culture thats been based on excess, which it has been for the last 20 or 30 years."
Oh, it’s important all right.

Thing is, it was as important in 1979, when Thatcher’s crew got in, as it is now, thirty two years later. If we allow the trough-gobbling hogs to take charge of our society, they will gorge and there will always be less to share out amongst the rest. It’s just that simple.

As for Danny Alexander, it would be nice to think that his acknowledgement of long-standing financier self-service meant that the politicians who tacitly encouraged that ‘excess’ now intended to rein it in. But we don’t really think that, do we?

How about it, Danny? Are you the man for the job? Will you prove us wrong?

Time will tell.
